Read story and give feedback

Overview

read the short story in the file below and post feedback. Here are some guidelines for that process:

As you read the story, focus on how the piece works as fiction rather than simply whether you “liked” it. In your reply, identify at least two strengths and offer two or three genuine questions that may help the writer revise.

Strengths

Point to specific moments where the story is working well. You might comment on:

  • A compelling narrator or distinctive voice
  • Clear character motivation or believable relationships
  • Effective conflict, tension, pacing, or structure
  • Vivid setting and sensory detail
  • Dialogue that reveals character or creates subtext
  • Cultural, regional, personal, or technical details that give the story rootedness
  • An opening that draws you in or an ending that feels earned
  • Images, sentences, or scenes that stayed with you

Whenever possible, name the passage or moment you mean and explain why it was effective.

Questions

Frame your suggestions as questions rather than commands. Focus on places where you wanted more clarity, development, or impact. For example:

  • What does the protagonist most want in this scene?
  • Could the stakes become clearer earlier?
  • What might help us better understand this character’s decision?
  • Would this moment be stronger as a fully developed scene rather than summary?
  • Are there places where more concrete setting details could anchor us?
  • Does the dialogue sound natural and reveal what the characters are not saying?
  • Is there backstory the reader does not yet need—or important context we need sooner?
  • Does the ending resolve or deepen the story’s central conflict?
  • Where did your attention slow down, and what may have caused that?

Be specific, respectful, and honest. Your goal is not to rewrite the story according to your own preferences, but to help the writer understand how the draft affected you as a reader and where its craft might be strengthened.
