Overview

First, watch this element of Art of the Western World to learn more about influential developments in sculpture, stone working, and architecture in Rome. This time Michael Wood walks us through the district in modern Rome where most of the ancient capitol remains, including the Flavian Amphitheater or Colosseum. Wood gives us a sketch of Republican and Imperial Roman politics, philosophy, and theology in the process. He’s joined by the aptly titled Dr. Brilliant, and with their help we explore, along with a few other key Roman architectural sites, Hadrian’s villa at Tivoli and, most important, the glorious Pantheon in central Rome itself.

Next, for 10 points, write a good paragraph of at least 8 sentences that addresses the following points about the work of art in question, the Pantheon. All the information can be gleaned from the video and my module slideshow, as well as the section on Rome in the "Empire" chapter of your textbook (see p. 100 or thereabouts, depending on your edition).

1) How is it historically situated? (Who made it, when, and where?)

2) Cultural purposes? (Why was it made?)

3) Key details or features? (Description, design, artistic or architectural school?)

4) Influence and importance? (How/why do we value it now?)

Note: the video quality is better at this link, but you'll have to move to the middle (after the Alter of Zeus at Pergamum) to reach the Roman section. The break is obvious.
