Overview
For each of the fellow group members, read their piece and post feedback. Here are some guidelines for that process:
As you read each group member’s story, focus on how the piece works as creative nonfiction rather than simply whether you “liked” it. In your reply, identify at least two strengths and offer two or three genuine questions that may help the writer revise.
Your responses should address issues such as:
- Where is the writing most vivid or engaging?
- Which scenes, images, or details are especially effective?
- What seems to be the deeper subject or question of the piece?
- Where would you like more scene, detail, context, or reflection?
- Where does the structure become difficult to follow?
- Does the balance between scene and reflection feel effective?
- Where does the narrator seem especially honest or self-aware?
- Are any people portrayed too simply?
- Are there places where the truth of the event or limits of memory need clarification?
- What possibilities might the writer explore during revision?
Your goal is not to rewrite the piece according to your own preferences. Your goal is to help the writer see how the draft is functioning for a careful reader.
