Overview
Select a student from your classroom or school who has been identified with a specific learning disability, emotional disability, orthopedic/physical disability, or intellectual disability that has been identified as needing to an IEP or a 504 plan (with permission). Collaborate with one of the student’s service providers (e.g., social worker, speech pathologist, or special education teacher) to plan your intervention to help the student improve his/her academic or behavioral performance. You will be expected to:
·Pre-Measure – Background Information: Gather information on the student’s current level of performance. Administer at least one of the subject area (reading, math, written language, content area) assessments in this course. Include other previous/relevant assessment data. What is the student able to do in the targeted area? What is the student’s school and academic history? What previous interventions have been attempted? How do the student’s family, culture, and school environments impact the learner and the delivery of special education services?
·Plan for Instruction – Goal Statement: Write a goal to help the student make progress in the targeted area. The goal should be specific, measureable, and include growth anticipated for a 6-week time period.
·Plan for Instruction – Intervention: Select a research-based intervention or strategy and implement it. Monitor and document the results over the next 6 weeks.
·Post-Measure – Prepare a portfolio that includes:
oInformation about your classroom, school, and community.
oDetailed description of the student, the student’s strengths, related areas of needs, school/academic/social-emotional history.
oData on the initial level of performance (academic areas or behaviors addressed), the interventions or strategies used, who was involved in implementing the plan, and how progress towards the goal was monitored.
oResults of the intervention and recommendations for continued support.
·Reflection: Write a 2-3 page reflection: Describe what you learned about your case study student as a learner and what you have learned about yourself as an instructor. What is your personal and/or professional response to this experience? How will what you learned during this case study project impact your future professional practice as a special educator? Make connections between new insights gained as a result of this assignment and previous knowledge and experience of similar situations.
The intention of this assignment is to provide targeted support to a student for a particular academic area or behavior and analyze and reflect on the impact of an intervention on student learning and growth. The 6-8 week end result may be that improvement is shown or that the strategies and interventions need to be re-evaluated (changed or discontinued). Include what data you have to support your decisions.
