(15%) (Objective 5)
This assignm ent has two parts – Part 1 is the Leadership Interview (described below) and
Part 2 is Organizational Analysis (described below). It should be subm itted as one

Leadership Interview:
Set up an interview with som eone that you think has dem onstrated effective leadership. It
could be your Supervisor, Director, Business Owner, Principal, Assistant Principal, for
exam ple. The interview should take place during week 4/5. Using your textbook and other
readings, form ulate at least 10 questions that would give you insight into why he/she does

and tasks, you want to delve into the leadership philosophy that drives the actions.
In your paper, state who you interviewed, a little bit about him /her, and why you chose this

m ay write your questions followed by the responses (which can be paraphrased). Conclude
with a sum m ary by responding to these questions: What did you learn from this experience?
What dom inant leadership style does your interviewee have? What effective leadership
characteristics were m ost evident during your interview? Did you hear of successful strategies
that you will incorporate into your leadership style?
Organizational Analysis
Following the interview , you should have an even stronger understanding of the leadership
and the organizational philosophy of this particular work setting. Prepare a brief analysis of
your organization’s effectiveness. Use these questions to guide your thinking: How is your
work setting organized (often there is a form al organization and an inform al organization)? Is
power shared? How are decisions m ade? Do you see evidence of principle-centered
leadership in your workplace? What are the strengths and weaknesses of your organization?
What im provem ents m ight you suggest?
This paper should be approxim ately 6 pages (including a cover page). Y ou m ay write in the
first person and no references are required.

Assignm ent 6 - Leading in a Distance Education Environm ent (15%) (Objectives 6)
The paper should demonstrate three main sections and five sub-sections. Plan your interview conversation
around the five broad topic areas enumerated below.
1. Current status of the distance education program – What is the scope of the program? What
are the strengths and challenges of the program today.
2. Institutional readiness – Was it challenging to launch a distance education program? Are resources
readily available and appropriate? What roadblocks to implementation/expansion currently exist?
3. Faculty/Staff readiness – Has it been difficult to staff distance education programs? What has been
done to encourage traditional instructors to prepare for and embrace distance education? What
feedback do you get from distance education instructors regarding their experiences and
recommendations for improvement?
4. Learner readiness – Who is the audience for the distance education program? Has enrollment
increased over time? What feedback do you get from students regarding their experience and
recommendations for improvement?
5. Looking Ahead – Is innovation encouraged and supported by institutional policies? What trends do
you see on the horizon for the distance education program?
