Overview
As we begin exploring lifespan psychology, one of the most important goals is to connect theory to real-life experiences. Developmental theories are not just abstract ideas—they help us understand how and why we grow, change, and make sense of the world over time.
In this discussion, you will begin applying these theories to your own life. Think about your personal experiences, challenges, and growth, and consider which theoretical perspective best explains your development so far. This is a great opportunity to reflect on your journey while also demonstrating your understanding of key concepts from this week.
Requirements:
- Initial post must be 300+ words
- Include at least one current scholarly reference (2020–2026)
- You must include both an in-text citation and full reference
- Complete 6 peer responses (one may be a response to me, your professor)
- Peer replies must be 150+ words each and should meaningfully continue the conversation (not just agree/disagree)
Prompt: Think about your own development so far. Which developmental theory (e.g., Freud, Erikson, Piaget) best explains your experiences? Provide a specific example and explain why that theory fits better than others.

Mini-Application: Lifespan Theories
This week’s mini-application is designed to help you move beyond simply understanding developmental theories and begin applying them to real-life experiences. Psychology becomes much more meaningful when you can connect concepts to your own life, and this activity is a great way to start doing that.
You will reflect on a specific moment or phase in your life and examine it through the lens of one developmental theory. Rather than summarizing the theory, focus on how it explains your experience and what insights it provides about your development.
Requirements:
- 1 paragraph (minimum of 5–7 sentences)
- Apply at least one concept from this week
- No sources required (but they are allowed)
- Focus on application, not summary
Prompt: Choose one developmental theory (e.g., Erikson, Piaget, Vygotsky). Describe a specific moment or phase in your life that reflects this theory. Explain how the theory helps make sense of that experience.
