Fieldwork Section A: Observing Compassionate Leadership
In this first part of your capstone fieldwork, you will focus on compassionate leadership as demonstrated by a leader within the allied health organization you have chosen to observe. This is Section A, the first of seven sections you will complete throughout the semester.
For this section, your attention should be solely on the leadership within the organization. You’ll reflect on how compassion is (or isn’t) integrated into the leader’s actions, decisions, and interactions. Later sections will explore other areas such as teamwork, communication, and organizational culture, but for now, concentrate on the leader’s role and approach.
As you learned in your textbook readings, compassionate leadership can be observed through four key behaviors: Attending, Understanding, Empathizing, and Helping. Use your field observations and interactions to evaluate how this leader demonstrates each aspect.
Assessment:
Name of person you are observing: Role in the organization: For each domain below, consider the indicators and reflect on where this individual might fall within the inclusive leadership development continuum: Emerging, Developing, Skilled, or Accomplished. AttendingThe ability to give others full, focused attention—especially during times of difficulty.
Based on your observations, how would you rate this individual’s approach to Attending? ☐ Emerging ☐ Developing ☐ Skilled ☐ Accomplished Provide specific observations that support your assessment: UnderstandingThe ability to seek and build shared understanding without imposing assumptions.
Based on your observations, how would you rate this individual’s approach to Understanding? ☐ Emerging ☐ Developing ☐ Skilled ☐ Accomplished Provide specific observations that support your assessment: EmpathizingThe capacity to connect with and feel concern for others' emotional experiences.
HelpingThe commitment to take action that alleviates distress and supports well-being.

Create a professional assessment; check for spelling and format your document professionally. Consider adding the organization's logo on your document or other formatting features.
Save this assessment for your final presentation at the end of the semester. Upload your assessment to Canvas and check back soon for instructor feedback, as revisions may be needed.
Ask The Instructor: What is the best way to complete this assessment? For this assessment, you will observe a leader through the lens of compassionate leadership. You may choose one leader to focus on throughout your observation, or observe several leaders if that provides a more complete picture. Plan to observe this leader in a variety of settings to gain a well-rounded understanding of their leadership style. This might include formal environments such as online meetings, staff briefings, grand rounds, public forums, or teaching/speaking events. You can also include informal settings like casual conversations, hallway interactions, or check-ins with team members. Spread your observations over several days or events so you can see patterns of behavior and how the leader adapts across different situations. Importantly, please let the leader know that you will be observing them for a class assignment. Transparency is key, and this should never be a surprise. Take notes on specific actions, words, and interactions that reflect (or fail to reflect) compassionate leadership. Your observations will form the foundation of your analysis, so the more thoughtful and diverse your observation, the stronger your assessment will be. |
