Overview
You are familiar with how the United States selects its leaders in the Executive and Legislative Branches. But, what about the Judicial Branch?
At the federal level, the President appoints judges, and the Senate must confirm them. As for the state level, that is for you to tell me.
Select your home or native state and describe how your state's trial and appellate judges are selected. At a minimum, answer the following questions: please use georgia as the home state
- Are these judges elected? Appointed? Some hybrid of both?
- Are the methods the same or different between trial and appellate judges?
- How long are the judges' terms?
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of how your state selects judges?
- What is "The Missouri Plan", and what are its strengths and weaknesses?
- How does your state compare to "The Missouri Plan"?
Some optional questions you can respond to. Understand that judges are sometimes little more than lawyers who know senators. With that in mind, does that give you confidence in your state's judicial system? As an MBA student, do you think donating to a judicial candidate's campaign is a good investment? Why or why not? Does this make you more or less inclined to litigate versus settle? Why or why not?
