RS, a new nurse graduate, is assigned to practice on a unit where practices are physician centered. RS is working on the night shift and knows that eventually will have to call a physician for advice about a patient. RS dreads this experience because has heard so many tales about how much physicians dislike being awakened in the middle of their sleep. RS asks a more experienced nurse how to present information, how to convey the importance of needing an answer, how to remain calm if the physician is disturbed about the call, how to document the oral communication interchange with the physician, and also asks what the nurse's first experience was like.
1. Is it true that physicians dislike being awakened at night?
2. Is asking a more experienced nurse about how to present information a good strategy?
3. What systematic approach could be used for communication (Hint: Describe SBAR in detail with examples of what you would say).
4. How could RS use the IOM competencies to practice his communication in advance of actually needing to call a physician?
5. Give examples of responses that the experienced nurse could give to RS that would be most helpful.
6. What do you see is the role of the nurse manager in this situation?
