Case Study 3: Liam – Non-Compliance and Task Refusal
Student Profile:
● Name: Liam
● Age: 13
● Grade: 7th
● Diagnosis: Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)
Behavioral Concerns:
Liam often refuses to complete assignments, ignores directions from teachers, and can be
verbally defiant, making sarcastic or dismissive remarks when corrected. He particularly resists
participating in group activities and projects, which results in missing out on collaborative
learning opportunities. His academic performance is below grade level, and he has a history of
negative peer interactions, which may contribute to his reluctance to participate.
Antecedent:
Non-compliance typically occurs during group activities or when he feels "called out" by the
teacher.
Consequences:
When Liam refuses to participate, teachers often resort to sending him to the office or allowing
him to work independently, but this approach reinforces his avoidance of group work rather than
addressing the behavior.
