Assignment #2
Addressing Literacy Needs with a Family/Community Literacy Model (CAEP Unit Assessment #12)
Directions:
Part 1: Introduction and Overview
Write an overview of the target population and literacy needs among students in the school and/or community, taking various forms of diversity and their importance in learning to read and write into consideration. Establish clear goals for student, family, and school participation in the literacy model (ILA Generated: Page 8 of 17 Standard 4.1).
Part 2: Rationale
Establish the need for a family literacy model by drawing from current student reading assessment data, both formal and informal. Describe how it will contribute to engage families and the community in literacy activities. Provide examples of collaborative family literacy models from research in the field to support the need for the proposed model (ILA Standard 3.3).
Part 3: Description of the Model
Assign a name to your proposed family literacy model and provide a detailed description of HOW it will help improve students’ reading development and achievement. Then list specific goals along with a mission statement that includes the vision and IRA/ILA Standards for the model. Describe the philosophy that will guide activities and participation in the model, including plans for culturally and linguistically diverse families (ILA Standard 1.3).
Part 4: Strategies
Include strategies for addressing literacy needs in response to reading scores that identify how many students are reading on grade level, below grade level, and above grade level, in addition to the diversity of the families in the school. Specify activities that are being proposed to address diversity needs (linguistic, reading intervention, special needs, etc.) of students and their families (ILA Standard 4.3).
Identify and interview a representative from at least two community organizations that can help to promote literacy for students performing below class levels.(for example, an after-school reading program, Big Brother/Big Sisters Reading Pals, etc.)
Consider the importance of family engagement and its impact on student learning:
1. Plans for involving families and the community in addressing literacy needs through a variety of engaging activities and experiences.
2. Communication practices for keeping parents and teachers informed and updated.
3. Strategies for involving culturally and linguistically diverse families in literacy activities.
4. Plans for reporting results of the model in terms of reading achievement for participating students.
Part 5: Communication Methods Describe specific ways within the home-school literacy model that will effectively optimize students’ use of traditional print, digital, and online resources in the family literacy model (ILA Standard 5.1).
