Overview
#1. This week I have found you a research article from my friends Dr.'s Holland and Haegele who researched (mis)representations of disabled athletes in media (specifically Twitter). While this study looks at disability broadly, the research specifically addresses Down Syndrome several times. In 300 (or more) words, please reflect on

1) what you learned in this article
2) how Down syndrome was portrayed on Twitter in this study
3) as a consumer of media, what might you do to shift the narrative
assigment #2
Each week, you will explore a disability-related topic of your choice through two forms of media and respond with a short critical reflection. This is your opportunity to engage with a disability, culture, and media representation in a way that speaks to your own learning style and interests. The media you choose needs to be directly related to Down Syndrome AND sport.
Choose two different types of media:
- A short film, documentary clip, or YouTube video
- A podcast episode or interview
- A social media post or campaign (Instagram, TikTok, X/Twitter, etc.)
- A news article or op-ed
- A zine, comic, or short reading (can pull from the Disability Justice Zine collection)
- An image or photo essay related to disability in sport, recreation, or public space
Your reflection should include (300-500 words):
- What did you choose and why? Briefly describe the media and the disability focus. (2 pts)
- What messages are being communicated? Explicit or implied—about disability, identity, or inclusion. (2 pts)
- What did you notice about representation? Consider tone, language, imagery, and stereotypes.(2 pts)
- What questions did this raise for you? Reflect on how this connects to your own life or what we’re discussing in class. (2 pts)
- How does this shape your understanding of disability and physical activity in society? (2 pts)
