For this week I want us to reflect on the following question: Why do you think the post-World War I world failed to maintain peace in Europe but following the Second World War Europe (at least Western Europe) was more peaceful not seeing a major war break out?
One argument is that the League of Nations for example failed because the United States did not join the organization (even though President Woodrow Wilson is the one who developed the idea and worked to create it). However, following World War II, the US took a leading, perhaps THE leading role in constructing a post war set of institutions (like the United Nations) which was more successful in maintaining some aspect of stability and preventing a third world war. What explains the change from a more isolationist foreign policy to a more internationalist foreign policy? What do you think? 1000 words
