4.11 (Graded Discussion) What is a State and Why Does it Matter? (Due September 21st)Hi Everyone,
For our topic and discussion this week, we will be looking at the concept of the state.
One of the most important organizing units in politics is the "state" which has both domestic and international significance. For this week, I want you to read Max Weber's and Francis Fukuyama's essays on the "state" and ask yourselves:
1. How does Max Weber define the state?
2. What does Fukuyama say about why a state should be formed?
3. Do you agree with these two scholars about what a state is and its function (for this question focus on the Fukuyama reading).

5.7 Graded Discussion on Democracy. Can there be too much of a good thing? (Due September 27th)Hi Everyone,
Okay, this week we are beginning (or in some ways continuing) our discussion of different forms of governing philosophies with a focus on democracy. As we will see the term democracy has been stretched over the preceding several hundred years to mean different things. Democracy can be 'rule by the people' but there are also other strands such liberal democracy, social democracy, direct democracy, and other terms such as social democracy, democratic socialism, which use the term democracy for their own definitions. Furthermore, democracy is more than elections. Elections can occur in non-democracies (e.g. Iran, Putin's Russia, Venezuela) and elections can be used to subvert democracy (more on this in the coming weeks). So democracy is more than elections but it can also mean different policies or practices to different people.
Having said this, I want you to do the readings, listen/watch the videos and ask yourself what is democracy to you, and can there be too much or not enough? Are there potential challenges in having too much democracy?
