Overview
1. Each week, you will explore a disability-related topic of your choice through two forms of media and respond with a short critical reflection. This is your opportunity to engage with a disability, culture, and media representation in a way that speaks to your own learning style and interests. The media you choose needs to be directly related to Deaf/Hard of Hearing AND sport.
Choose two different types of media:
- A short film, documentary clip, or YouTube video (might I add that there is a great documentary called "Sound of Fury" [Image unavailable: image.png]By Josh Aronson, on YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime, and other streaming platforms that is a great documentary on this topic.
- A podcast episode or interview
- A social media post or campaign (Instagram, TikTok, X/Twitter, etc.)
- A news article or op-ed
- A zine, comic, or short reading (can pull from the Disability Justice Zine collection)
- An image or photo essay related to disability in sport, recreation, or public space
Your reflection should include (300-500 words):
- What did you choose and why? Briefly describe the media and the disability focus. (2 pts)
- What messages are being communicated? Explicit or implied—about disability, identity, or inclusion. (2 pts)
- What did you notice about representation? Consider tone, language, imagery, and stereotypes.(2 pts)
- What questions did this raise for you? Reflect on how this connects to your own life or what we’re discussing in class. (2 pts)
- How does this shape your understanding of disability and physical activity in society? (2 pts)
- assigment #2 This week you get to read research that Dr. Blagrave published a few years ago looking at autistic adult recommendations in physical activity settings. After reading this study, please answer the following questions: 1) What are the overall themes and experiences of autistic adults in physical activity settings? 2) What are some barriers to participation for autistic adults? 3) How might this information inform your future career OR what are the biggest take-aways from this article?
