write up for the PhysioEx Metabolism and Thyroid Hormone (Activity 1 Parts 1-4) from PhysioEx

Produce a write up for the PhysioEx Metabolism and Thyroid Hormone (Activity 1 Parts 1-4) from PhysioEx.  I am providing you an outline, but your report should be in nonnumeric, paragraph form.  Submit your draft by uploading it on Canvas before 1159PM Sunday.

Your report should be in the format and style described below, written clearly and formally, have clearly identified sections (include headers for each section), and well-prepared graphs and tables (appropriate titles, labeled axis, and a short narrative describing the table or graph).

Your report needs to have a labelled Results section where you summarize your data from Part 1 into a table, your data from Part 2 into a bar graph comparing the metabolic rates of the baseline rats and rats injected with thyroxine, your data from Part 3 into a bar graph comparing the metabolic rates of the baseline rats and rats injected with thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), and your data from Part 4 into a bar graph comparing the metabolic rates of the baseline rats and rats injected with propylthiouracil.  Each table and graph needs a short description, but not explanation, highlighting important observations.

Your report needs to have a labelled Summary section where you explain your data using physiology.  You need at least one paragraph for each of the activities.  Briefly describe the conditions of the Part 1 rats. The majority of the paragraphs should focus on how the metabolic rates of the rats from activity one differ from the rates of the rats after the injection.   Relate your observations to the conditions of the rats.  Make sure to cite any information which is not common knowledge within the text.

Your report needs to have a References cited section.  All citations within the text need to have a thorough reference in this section.

1.

Results.  Include a table which summarizes the data from Part 1, Part 1 and bar charts which compare the metabolic rate of rats from Part 1 to rats from Parts 2, 3, and 4.  Each graph and table should have a descriptive title, labeled axis, and a 1-2 sentence narrative describing the table or graph.  Each of the bar graphs for Parts 2, 3, and 4 should clearly show the difference between the control group rats (from Part 1, where you established Basal Metabolic Rate) and the experimental group rats of the activity from the different Parts.  Consult the figures in your lecture text for good examples of how to present figures, graphs and tables.

Questions

  1. You should report the weight, the measured amount of oxygen each rat consumed during Part 1, and the calculated basal metabolic rate of each rat for Part
  2. This is the only information in the table. Do not include any information from Parts 2, 3, or 4 in the table.

Questions

  1. The x axis should show your rats as a control (rats from Part 1 which did not receive an injection) and experimental groups. The y axis should show metabolic rate with the appropriate units. You only show calculated metabolic rates on the graphs (not weight or measured oxygen consumed). Graph 1 will show the metabolic rate of the three rats from Part 1 and the metabolic rate of the three rats (which received an injection) from Part
  2. Graph 2 will show the metabolic rate of the three rats from Part 1 and the metabolic rate of the three rats (which received an injection) from Part
  3. Graph 3 will show the metabolic rate of the three rats from Part 1 and the metabolic rate of the three rats (which received an injection) from Part 4.

In addition to the graphs and table, the Results section will have short narratives about each graph and table.  In your written part of the Results, do not analyze or explain your observations.  Stick to pointing out the observations.

2.

Summary:  Your write up also needs a Summary section (at least 4 paragraphs).  Write a short summary discussing the actual results of your experiment.  Refer to your table and graphs and point out any important data.   If your actual experimental results did not match your expected results, write a paragraph suggesting one reason your actual results might have been different from the expected results.

A citation within the text is needed to provide the source of any information which is not common knowledge.  A rule of thumb is common knowledge would be information you would expect an average Grossmont College student to possess.  Citations within the text for a single author consist of the authors last name and page number where you found the information inside parentheses (for example (Silverthorn, pg. 67)), two authors consists of both authors’ last name (for example (Holden and Schwann, pg. 72)), and multiple authors consists of the last name of the first author followed by et al. (‘and others’ in Latin) (Zao et al., pg. 19).  Websites should indicate person or group responsible for the information and the date you accessed it (for example (Alila Medical Media, 02/15/2023))

Explanations go in the Summary.   This is where you answer “how” or “why” questions.  To explain the physiology underlying your observations, think about the what the injections do (thyroxine, TSH, and propylthiouracil) and the target tissues/cells for each.

Which rat has the highest metabolic rate in Activity 1.  Use physiology to explain why this rat has the highest metabolic rate in Activity 1?

In Activity 2, how does thyroxine affect each rat's metabolic rate?  Explain why each rat is affected this way. (Think about the target cells for thyroxine.)

In Activity 3, how does TSH affect each rat's metabolic rate?  Explain why each rat is affected this way. (Think about the target cells for TSH.)

In Activity 4, how does propylthiouracil affect each rat's metabolic rate? Explain why each rat is affected this way. (Think about the target cells for propylthiouracil.)

One way to approach the summary is to open your explanation of each part with a statement of what you did, then tell your reader what you observed, and finish with explaining how or why.

For example: “In Activity 2, each rat was injected with thyroxine." Then give a sentence stating what happened to the metabolic rates of each rat when compared to the rat from part 1.  Refer your reader to the appropriate graph. For example, (Graph 2).  Then use what you know about thyroxine and the target cells of thyroxine to explain your results.

You need to use the Alila Medical Group video, a Human Physiology textbook, and PhysioEx. You should only use these three.  Make sure to include the author and page number or date visited.  For example (Silverthorn, page 67 ) for the text or  (Pearson, February 15, 2023) for the PhysioEx website.

References Cited.  You need to provide your reader with enough information so they can find your sources.  You should be consistent and thorough.  You need to use your textbook, the and the PhysioEx site.  You should only cite the following three sources.  Do not use other references.  Provide enough detail so your reader can find the information if they desire.

  • For this lab, we will be using Activity 1 Metabolism and Thyroid Hormone of PhysioEx Exercise 4 to develop a lab write up. Activity 1 has four (4) parts. Part 1 allows you to establish a baseline metabolism which will be used as a control (comparison) in Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4.
