Evolutionary Processes of Antibiotic Resistance

Overview

2- 2.5 pages, single spaced, size 12 font Times New Roman.

In this assignment you will identify a societal issue/problem that is influenced/informed by evolutionary processes or concepts. Topic for paper: AntiBiotic Resistance

In one to two paragraphs, you will outline the general topic (i.e., state the topic/issue/problem), providing sufficient background information to understand why it is important and deserving of societal attention. For example, if you were talking about crop pests it could be useful to give information about the monetary loss due to specific pests.

In another one to two paragraphs, you will clearly state and discuss the relevant link to evolutionary processes, concepts and/or methods in the study of, or solution to, your chosen problem/issue. You must clearly explain any evolutionary concept, process or method that you are discussing. For example, if gene flow is central to your issue, you would use simple terms to explain what gene flow is and its relevance to the issue.

  1. Mutation
  2. Horizontal gene transfer
  3. Natural selection
  4. Gene amplification

In the last one to two paragraphs, you will discuss our current understanding of the issue and prospects for the future study of the topic. What do we still need to learn about the topic? What data are missing? What is the next step?

Throughout the document you are REQUIRED to cite relevant PRIMARY LITERATURE to support your statements, particularly those relating to an issue’s foundation in evolutionary thinking. You can also cite relevant popular media to support the societal importance of the issue (e.g., economic impact stats or disease prevalence or extinction events etc.).
