SDMC The Human Brain Questions

Overview

I'm working on a biology question and need the explanation and answer to help me learn.

Consider the following facts about the human brain:

  • The adult brain uses 20% of the body’s energy but accounts for only about 2% of the body’s total weight (averaging around 3 pounds).
  • When a person is awake, his or her brain generates 25 watts of power; this is enough to power a lightbulb.
  • The left side of the brain controls the right side of the body, while the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body. Relate this to a stroke on the right side of the brain.
  • The average human brain contains 100 billion neurons; the rate of neuron growth during the development of a fetus is 250,000 neurons per minute.
  • There are more neurons in the human brain than there are stars in the Milky Way.

What did you know about the brain?

  1. Write 4 more information points about the brain not included in the examples already listed in the upper section.
  2. Choose a brain disorder, then using medical terminology, describe symptoms, signs and diagnosis of that disorder.
