The ratio of eumelanin to pheomelanin, the total amount of melanin generated, the number and size of melanosomes, and their distribution all play a major role in determining a person's skin color. Melanosomes in individuals with naturally darkly coloured skin are big and packed with eumelanin. What biological factors affect skin color is because in persons with darker skin. Melanin which is produced by skin cells called melanocytes, is the main factor in determining skin color. Lightly and darkly pigmented people have different skin tones depending on how active their melanocytes are not how many melanocytes are present in their skin. The epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue are the three layers that make up the skin Kanitakis. The epidermis which is the skin's topmost layer, is made up of a particular kind of cells called keratinocytes that produce keratin, a long, thin protein with defensive properties. Human skin color variations are caused by variations in the types and concentrations of various pigments known collectively as melanin and produced by skin cells.
