Bi101 assginment

Overview

Objective:

To consider the personal and societal implications of rapidly advancing genetic technologies by watching an excellent sci-fi movie.

Procedure:
Watch the movie Gattaca (1997)

Write a short summary of the plot and your reflections on the theme. And answer the following questions (keeping in mind the concept of genetic determinism):

Answer These Questions Sciencey Questions: Use examples from the movie to explain multifactorial traits and the interactions between genetics and the environment?

From a genetic (don't just say because the environment plays a role for this question concentrate on the genetics) standpoint why is it not quite as easy as the movie portrays it to predict complex behaviors like intelligence and athletic ability?

Movie Reflection and Society Questsions: What point do you think that the movie is trying to make? Support with evidence from the movie? Do you think this is a realistic concern, why or why not?

What do you think Vincent and Director Josef's actions given their "genetic make up" say about the writer/directors views on the validity of detailed genetic testing?

Given that in vitro fertilization is the primary means by which couples have children in this society do you feel it is ethical to select the embryos for implantation based on specific traits such as eye color, hair color, height etc.? What about selecting for the absence of deadly or painful diseases, disabilities, addictive behavior (likelihood of becoming addicted to drugs), longevity, learning disorders, inelegance, athletic ability etc.?

If these tests were available and routine do you think it would be irresponsible of the parents not to take advantage of them (as the genetic counselor in the movie implies)?

Background: Our understanding of genetics is increasing exponentially. The synergy of computational power, sharing of information via interactive digital repositories, and understanding of genomics allows us to understand and manipulate the genome of humans and other organisms in ways we thought were science fiction just 20 short years ago. This present perplexing questions and dilemmas for individuals, families, and society.
