Overview

Part 1 – Calculating Carbon Emissions

For this activity you will use a spreadsheet developed by a group of students at San Francisco State University to estimate your carbon emissions. Before beginning the activity it would be helpful if you had your most recent utility (electric, natural gas, and/or heating oil) bills handy. If you do not pay for your utilities, please use estimates based on information from friends, family, or co-workers. Follow the directions within the spreadsheet and answer each question as honestly as you can in order to calculate your total carbon emissions. Make sure you complete both the Home lifestyle emissions and Transportation sections of the spreadsheet. Part 2 – Carbon Footprint Comparison So how does you carbon footprint compare to the average American? Create a graph that compares your carbon emissions in the areas of: 1. Energy1 2. Waste 3. Food 4. Vehicle use The US averages for each of the areas listed above is in a light blue box to the right of your totals. Make sure that your graph is properly titled and has correct axes labels.
