Write a 250- to 350-word post in your own words.
Prompt
Think of an example of natural selection in a real, current species. In your own words, write a brief summary and show how it illustrates each component of Darwin and Wallace's theory of evolution by natural selection.
- Refer back to the components (steps) of natural selection in Lawlor's Lesson about Darwin's theory.
- Use the concepts and the steps I laid out in the lesson on the slide I said was the most important.
- Other videos may help, too.
- It's okay to use and cite one source of information outside the module about the species you choose. Keep your quotation or paraphrase short. Focus on the prompt.
- Keep it simple.
- Choose just one nonfictional species that is alive today.
- Use the common English name. No need for the Latin "scientific" name.
- No giraffes, bird beaks, moths or humans should be in your example.
- If you choose a predator, don't also choose its prey. Keep it simple.
- Choose just one kind of variation. For example, giraffe necks vary in length from short to long.
- Don't also include their spots or tongues or overall size. Keep it simple.
- Choose just one kind of competition. For example, giraffes compete for food resources in tall trees.
- Don't also include running from predators or fighting for mates. Keep it simple.
- Follow through.
- What does "winning" mean in your example? Put that in terms of the concepts and vocabulary in this module.
Points
- 2 points for connecting your example to at least four components (steps), using this week's vocabulary correctly.
- 1 point for identifying what "winning" the competition means in your example, using this week's concepts and vocabulary correctly.
- 1 point for meeting the length requirement.
- .5 bonus point for using standard written English.
- Make sure there are no more than 4 errors in grammar, spelling and punctuation
