Previous work (review portion of the paper) (~750 words)
The Previous works section offers more specific context that helps us understand how your study builds upon what is already known to find out something is currently unknown. You must cite primary literature in this section. We require that 10 pieces of primary literature, at a minimum, must be cited throughout this paper; all or the majority of those citations should occur in this section. Note that the papers you found in your initial primary literature search may not be the same papers that you cite here, after further developing your topic. This is the most challenging section to write. Ask yourself as you write each paragraph: Why am I telling the reader this? Why will this information help the reader understand my study design? a. What have the results of previous research relevant to the unknown show us? What do the results of previous research imply about the unknown? b. What remains unknown (that you are going to address)? Use the last paragraph to set us up for your study design.
