Exploring Developmental Genes

Overview

A 5-6 page paper is a good length guideline, however, that includes a cover page and references cited. Line spacing is not to exceed 1.5 and please use 11 pt font.

choose a mutation in a developmental gene, one to explore and teach to a classmate. You may want to begin by researching developmental diseases or congenital birth defects and then mine for the gene players. You will write a research paper on the gene you chose and the problems associated with the mutation. Your report for either the experiment or straight research paper may include pages and sections such as: the title, abstract, introduction, background information on the disease or what you are writing about, multiple experimental results, discussions/conclusions of results, and also to pull the paper together. Include a biological explanation of the genotypic (ex. lysine substitute) and phenotypic details of the mutation, (if your gene results in an improperly folded protein discuss this malformation, what does it look like? Where and how is it improperly folded and what role does it play in the resultant disease) and a discussion of the current research involving your mutation and any future studies you can propose to further the research in this field. Include a reference

Examples: DMD mutation for muscular dystrophy.

Calcium’s biological importance and diseases of calcium deficiencies.

The prevalence of genetic malformations in natural animal populations.

Traumatic childhood experiences and development.
