Impact of Dietary Choices - Impact of Dietary Choices 1

As you explored in this week's lesson on digestion, scientists continue to discover and learn how our diet affects multiple dimensions of our health, including the microbes in our gut, cardiovascular health, and metabolism, among others. For this discussion, each student will be responsible for reading one of the research articles below and sharing their knowledge with the discussion group. As a heads up - these articles are dense and written for other researchers. As such, this assignment is designed for you to utilize generative AI (e.g., ChatGPTLinks to an external site., Google GeminiLinks to an external site., Microsoft Bing AILinks to an external site., etc.) to help you process the reading.

It is strongly recommended to utilize the prompt found in the "AI to Help Understand Challenging Texts" tab on the Using AI Responsibly page. Remember to provide an appropriate citation, and write the information in your own words.

Post Requirements:

This assignment requires two posts, each completed individually.

First Post - Due Wednesday at 11:59 PM

Each person in your group will read one of the four articles listed above, selected on a first-come, first-serve basis. It is strongly recommended that you make a placeholder post to avoid multiple students reading and posting about the same section. You may reply to your placeholder post with your responses to the prompts.

First, title your post with the title of your chosen article.

  1. In no more than five to six sentences, summarize the major findings of the article. In your summary, explain...
    • the dietary treatment/variable examined in the study.
    • the outcomes were documented. Be very specific about what they measured.
  2. List and define at least two vocabulary words or phrases that are related to the summary you provided above. These can be any words/phrases that you didn't know the meaning of, or generally challenging terminology.
  3. Record and embedLinks to an external site. a short video (no more than 2 minutes) where you make 1-2 dietary recommendations to a family member or friend, based on the findings of the article. For each recommendation...
    • identify which health outcome(s) will be affected and how. Be specific!
    • explain the evidence from the article that supports the recommendation.
    • be sure to limit the amount of jargon and explain all relevant terminology. Consider your audience!
  4. Provide a full citation of the article and the generative AI program that you used (if any).

Second Post - Due Saturday at 11:59 PM

Choose one classmate's post to which to respond. Try to respond to someone who hasn't yet received a response.

  1. Read your classmate's post and watch their video. Then, reflect on your diet over the past several days. Comment on how you can potentially incorporate their recommendation into your dietary habits. In your explanation, consider the following:
    • Can the recommendation(s) address any of your current health issues or risk factors?
    • Is the recommendation feasible and/or sustainable?
    • How might these dietary choices affect your overall health?
  2. As previously discussed in community health, our built environment affects the choices that we make on a daily basis. What are some environmental factors where you live that affect your dietary choices? What are some changes (either personal or systemic) that would improve your dietary habits, related to the recommendations in your peer's post?

Helpful Resources

The following resources provide information about how to embed your video in the discussion. The simplest way to make and post your video is to record your video directly in Canvas using the Rich Content Editor. Another tool available through Canvas is Canvas Studio. Alternatively, you can record your video using the camera on a smartphone or create a Google Slides presentation and use a screen recorder like ScreenPal. If you have made your video using an external source, you can either post the video directly in the discussion or upload your video to YouTube and embed the video in your post.
