Overview
Vaccinology – Exam 1 and Exam 2 papers
The purpose of these assignments is for you to explore a vaccine in-depth, and add to your portfolio of projects for your Master’s degree or certificate.
Exam 1 paper, due end of Week 8 – Write a 4 page double spaced paper (including figures and references) on a new or emerging vaccine. The vaccine may address an infectious disease or a cancer. Be sure to address the following questions in your paper:
What disease does the vaccine address? Why is there a need for this vaccine? Feel free to include statistics on the epidemiology of the disease in the United States and/or globally.
If the vaccine addresses an infectious disease, describe the causative pathogen. If the vaccine addresses a cancer, describe the cellular mechanisms of the cancer.
How is the vaccine constructed? If the vaccine addresses a pathogen, it a live, non-live, or nucleic acid vaccine, and are there any additives such as adjuvants or carriers? If the vaccine addresses a cancer, how is it made on a cellular level?
How is the vaccine manufactured?
What is the history of vaccine development for this disease? Were there any failures or learnings along the way? Were there any basic science discoveries that contributed to the vaccine’s development?
What is known about the immune response that the vaccine generates? Is it a humoral response or cell-mediated response, or both?
Who receives the vaccine, and when? Is it a childhood vaccine, young adult vaccine, travel vaccine, or adult vaccine?
Exam 2 paper, due on last day of semester – Add to your Exam 1 paper to create an 8 page double spaced paper (including figures and references) on a new or emerging vaccine. The vaccine may address an infectious disease or a cancer. Be sure to address the following questions in your expanded paper:
Does the vaccine have any limitations on its efficacy? Have there been any cases reported of vaccine ineffectiveness?
Does the vaccine require any updating to increase its efficacy?
Is the vaccine cost-effective?
Is the vaccine well-accepted by the public? What are the factors that limit acceptance of the vaccine?
Does the vaccine present any ethical issues? Is the vaccine universally accessible, or can its accessibility be improved?
Would you suggest any alternative approaches to creating this vaccine?
The papers will be submitted through Canvas; an assignment upload link will be created for each, and you can submit your paper as either a PDF or Word document.
