Emotional State and the Effect on Developing Tumors

Research on the effect of one's emotional state and the effect on developing tumors and/or on the effect of treating them. Use 2 scientific journals to create the post. Ask a curios question as a title and start an engaging discussion with other students.

Use the 2-3 open access scientific journals to create the post.

Use the following example as a guide:

Is mental health a possible candidate for tumor development?

Patients who struggle with cancer often have emotional turmoil. A common example of this is cancer patients developing mental health problems once they are diagnosed with a type of cancer. Statistics from the article: Mental health needs in cancer – a call for change, explain “Data shows that the prevalence of depression and anxiety among cancer patients is up to 20% and 10% respectively, regardless of the treatment phase or point in the disease trajectory…” (Pg. 4) It is, unfortunately, common to develop mental health issues once an individual has been diagnosed with cancer, which can lead to neglect and misuse of the body. This can worsen the physical condition of the body and increase tumor cell growth.

Few studies have been made to identify whether mental health can influence the risk of tumor development. However, scientists defend that feelings of hopelessness, sadness, distress, uncertainty, and loss of control harm the health of cancer patients. They are detrimental coping mechanisms that could hurt the body more than heal, such as the mistreatment of drugs, alcohol, etc. From the first time someone is diagnosed with cancer, it might even worsen during treatments and pre-treatment phases. Statistics from depression and anxiety among people living with and beyond cancer: a growing clinical and research priority, states “Rates of depression were relatively similar following treatment (18%), during treatment (15%) and pre-treatment (17%), with the 95% confidence intervals for these estimates largely overlapping.” (Pg. 5) This shows that there is a link between cancer and mental health, as patients are seen growing in mental health and then falling over a lengthy period.

There is an effect on mental health when cancer is involved. On the other hand, as we know, multiple factors develop cancer. Is damaged mental health a huge factor when determining someone’s risk for cancer?
