Overview
In DB2 the topic was DB 2 - Why is nutrition so confusing? You had some interesting insight and I hope through the course of this semester you've come to understand the complexity of nutrition. Nutrition is a science. Science evolves. What we learn today may change over the course of years.
Initially you had many questions - and I get that - nutrition CAN BE confusing. Over the past month, you had questions answered but you also might have additional questions.
Perhaps now you're recognizing confirmation bias in areas of your life. We tend to favor that information which confirms what we think we know. We ALL suffer from confirmation bias - myself included! And now with how algorithms work, we're being pushed toward information that reinforces what we believe. Be aware. I encourage you to be open-minded to alternative ideas.
There are many versions of this saying: "Falsehood flies and the truth comes limping after it." -Jonathan Swift. And this saying, often incorrectly attributed to Mark Twain or Winston Churchill, "A lie will fly around the whole world while the truth is getting its boots on."😄
As (I hope) you're beginning to see, the science of nutrition is not always so straightforward. The answer to "Should I do this/eat this/drink this/take this (fill in the blank)" might be: Yes. No. Maybe (it depends). We're all individuals with individual needs.
There is now so much sponsored content online how do you know what is real and what is not? Disclosing relationships is required. One student confided last semester how much she spent/wasted on products she heard from a popular beauty YouTuber. She later discovered the influencer was being paid - not necessarily because she loved the products. [There are guidelines - published by the FTC (Federal Trade Commission), Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers. TruthinAdvertising.org summarized a few of the FTC guidelines in this article, The Truth on Social Media Influencer Disclosure Requirements. There are many situations where disclosure is required and if you are an influencer or know someone, be aware of those guidelines.]
When it comes to nutrition, I'm fascinated by what I see. Somebody does something successfully. They write a book and voila, suddenly they're an expert. It's crazy. I think a lot has to do with the Dunning-Kruger Effect. (read about it it's interesting). I also wrote about it here - I Used to Know Everything! It's about my nutrition journey, how/why I changed careers to study nutrition, and why I'm so passionate about it.
- Review the info I just wrote above. Click links for further clarification. Discuss in your post.
- Reread the DB 2 - Why is nutrition so confusing? posts and comment on what still confuses you about nutrition?
- If you never read my follow up announcement - there is a LOT of info - check it out. Follow-up DB 2 - LONG but you will want to read :)
- How have you become a more critical thinker?
- Have you gotten what you hoped out of this class? Explain.
Okay! That's enough...your turn. Create a new thread must be at LEAST 300 words.
