BIO242 Endocrine Case Study

Overview

You will identify the important anatomical structures/organs involved in this situation, hormones secreted, and physiological reactions/adjustments taking place due to the Endocrine System functions. The Endocrine System causes other systems to act, so you may have to look at other physiological systems as well to be able to fully explain what is happening. Your answers need to be in your own words and/or diagrams and all sources outside of our course textbook need to be cited using APA format (I am not picky here, just give me a decent citation). You need to submit this assignment through Turnitin. Your similarity score must be LESS than 20%. If it is MORE than 20% I will not grade it. You don't need to find outside sources but you can quote from this https://openstax.org/books/anatomy-and-physiology/...

Remember to focus on the Endocrine System and include at the least, all of the following TERMS in your answers. You are required to underline or highlight these terms in your answers. I will not grade it if they are not underlined or highlighted. This has to be all in your own words or you will be graded a 0.

  • Adrenal Glands
  • Glucose
  • Insulin
  • Hypothalamus
  • Anterior Pituitary Gland
  • Posterior Pituitary Gland
  • Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE)
  • ACTH
  • Cortisol
  • Aldosterone
  • Renin
  • Angiontensin I
  • Angiontensin II
  • Liver
  • Lungs
  • Angiotensinogen
  • ADH
  • Kidneys
  • Thyroid Gland
  • TSH
  • T3
  • Iodine
  • Iron
  • T4
  • Vitamin D
  • Adrenal Cortex
  • Growth hormone

Case Study Assessment Task: Below are four case studies. You need to read these. Then based on your understanding of the endocrine system, explain in detail how the endocrine system is reacting during these given situations to bring the body back to homeostasis or may be causing adverse physiological effects.

Case Studies:

1) Tianna was riding her horse on a warm sunny day (101 degrees Fahrenheit). She had overdressed for the day, not knowing it was going to be this hot. She had already sweated out 1 Liter of fluids and her respiratory rate was increasing (currently at 23 breaths per minute while sitting). She was also feeling dizzy and not well. Tianna also recently found out she was hyperglycemic and concerned that her beta cells in the Islets of Langerhans were not functioning correctly.

2) Anthony lives in Western Washington and has been experience muscle weakness, fatigue, weight loss, depression, and decreased appetite. Anthony recently moved here from California one year ago. Upon feeling these symptoms for a long period, Anthony decided to go see the doctor. The doctor found the following results:

  • low serum levels of Sodium ions
  • High ACTH levels
  • Hypoglycemia (think about the connection between ACTH, cortisol, and hypoglycemia)

3) Jane recently went to the doctor because she was gaining weight and didn't know why. A thyroid test was performed to see what was going on:

  • TSH was above normal
  • T4 was high
  • T3 as low
  • Iron was low

4) Richard recently went to the doctor as he was experiencing the following symptoms:

  • muscle weakness
  • high blood pressure
  • fatigue
  • frequent urination
  • vision problems due to high blood pressure

The doctor prescribed ACE inhibitors and said there was a problem related to his adrenal gland. Explain why ACE inhibitors would be involved and how the adrenal gland could be related physiologically to the symptoms above in Richards case.
