Alternate Assignment: Go to the University of Utah's genetics site and their Transcribe and Translate a Gene Activity: Website Link Links to an external site.
You will get a chance to transcribe and translate 3 proteins (from 3 genes). After you pick a gene, you will first transcribe part of the DNA into mRNA. The mRNA will move into the nucleus and you will translate part of the mRNA code and build a section of the protein. When you complete the translation part, the software will explain the role of the stop codon and then tell you the name of the protein you just created. The name will also scroll across the top of the screen. Pay special attention to the names and descriptions of each protein. Note: there is one error (or oversimplification) in the video - you will be asked about it as part of the assignment.
You will need to transcribe and translate all 3 genes and take screenshots of the proteins produced by each.
*** So, make sure to pause the video (when you see the name and image of the protein) and take a screenshot of this image showing the name of the protein you created. ***
Then, go back and transcribe and translate the other 2 genes and take screenshots for them also.
At the end, you will have and should submit 3 screenshots, one of each protein showing its name. You could paste them all into a single document OR submit three separate screenshots. You will also submit the paragraph described below.
In addition, you need to type up a paragraph explaining the following:
A) What specifically you did during the transcription portion of the activity
B) What specifically you did during the translation portion of the activity.
C) Provide the names and a brief description of the functions of each of the 3 proteins you made.
D) During the video, the narrator stated that there were "20 tRNA molecules" - this is incorrect. Explain why it is incorrect and why you think the error was made (hint - think about where the number 20 came from).
