This week's homework assignment asks you to work through a "virtual lab" on using a technology called a "microarray". In this virtual lab, you will examine the mRNA produced by cancerous skin cells and by non-cancerous skin cells and compare the two. Production of mRNA is used to identify whether a gene is "turned on" since transcription (where mRNA is produced) is the first step in producing proteins (recall that translation is the second step). A big advantage of this technology is that it lets you examine thousands of genes at once.
The "virtual lab" is one of a number of good activities/videos/"interactive explores" on a website hosted by the Genetic Science Learning Center at the University of Utah. The following link will direct you to their main page (I am sending you there rather than directly to the virtual lab to encourage you to explore the other materials on the website).
To get to virtual lab, click on link below:
- Learn Genetics website LinkLinks to an external site.
- Scroll to the bottom right of the page and click on "Virtual Labs" within the "Science Tools" box.
- Once there, click on "DNA Microarray"
As you work through this "virtual lab", answer the questions on the homework assignment. Most are answered directly from the virtual lab (and are presented in the order you will encounter them) though the last question asks you to think of how to apply this technology beyond what the lab highlighted.
