It would be difficult to put a tree drawing exercise on an exam so I am giving you this for homework. Before you start this assignment, make sure to go over the 2 documents I made for you in this module entitled: "How to draw a phylogeny step by step". Those two documents provided there will lead you through the process.
For your assignment, you will draw a phylogenetic tree (in the manner described in this module) that correctly shows the following information:
- Humpback whales are the closest relatives of Dolphins (of the groups in this phylogenetic tree).
- Wolves and Weasels share a more recent common ancestor with each other than with anyone else in this phylogeny.
- Hippos are more closely related to the group [Whales & Dolphins] than to anyone else in the phylogeny.
- Bears share a more recent common ancestor with Sea Lions than with anyone else in this phylogeny.
- [Wolves & Weasels] are more closely related to [Bears & Sea Lions] than to anyone else in this phylogeny.
- Tigers and Hyenas are each others closest relatives.
- The group [Tigers & Hyenas] is more closely related to the group [Wolves, Weasels, Bears, & Sea lions] than to anyone else in this phylogeny.
- Mice are more closely related to the group Beavers than to anyone else in this phylogeny.
- Porcupines are more closely related to the group [Mice & Beavers] than to anyone else in the phylogeny.
- Rabbits share a more recent common ancestor with the group [Porcupines, Mice, & Beavers] than with anyone else in the phylogeny.
- The group [Humpback whales, Dolphins, & Hippos] are more closely related to the group [Wolves, Weasels, Bears, Sea lions, Tigers, & Hyenas] than with anyone else in the phylogeny.
- All the groups covered so far in the phylogeny are more closely related to each other than to Kangaroos.
Make sure to include all the groups listed above in your phylogenetic tree and make sure they are all joined to each other correctly given the information provided.
You can hand draw your phylogeny, take a picture or scan, and submit as a jpeg file, or paste into a Microsoft Word document or save as a PDF. You may also draw it using a computer if you prefer but your phylogenetic tree has to be drawn by you and include just these groups.
Remember that you can also check a draft of this assignment with me for comments before submitting it.
