Overview

Students will select a real‑life, health‑or physiology‑related situation (personal, family, community, or well‑documented public case) and apply the Problem‑Solving process used in the Bio 1010 case study. The focus is on the problem‑solving process: define, strategize, propose, evaluate, plan implementation, and project outcomes. Work must show thinking steps and justify choices with course concepts and at least one credible source.

Learning Goals

  • Practice clear scientific reasoning and written communication.
  • Apply blood, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urinary, or endocrine system concepts to real situations.
  • Consider ethical, cultural, and contextual factors when designing solutions.
  • Build a measurable plan and criteria for evaluating outcomes.

Requirements and Boundaries

  • Scenario: Student chooses any real, non‑fictional situation involving human physiology (examples below). Students must not violate privacy or describe identifiable personal medical records; if using a personal/family case, redact names and identifying details.
  • Scope: Keep the case limited so it is solvable in a short project (500–800-word report; 150–200-word discussion summary).
  • Sources: Cite at least one course text/reference (Marieb 2025 or equivalent) and one external credible source (health organization, textbook, or peer‑reviewed article).
  • Collaboration: Individual assignment. Use your own reasoning; reference external help if used.
  • Academic integrity: No fabrication. If you lack sufficient real‑world detail, choose a well‑documented public case or anonymized composite.

Example Scenarios Students May Choose

  • A roommate with iron‑deficiency symptoms (fatigue, pale skin) and a restricted diet.
  • A family member with frequent acid reflux and intermittent anemia.
  • A student athlete experiencing shortness of breath and dizziness on exertion.
  • A community elder with chronic cough, smoking history, and reduced exercise tolerance.
  • A childcare worker sees frequent GI upset in toddlers at daycare, suggesting possible dietary intolerance in a child.
  • A public news case about heat‑related illness after a local event.

Assignment Steps and Deliverables

  1. Define the Problem (short paragraph). Include all contextual factors: who, what, when, where, constraints, resources, and relevant lab/symptom data (real or plausible documented values).
  2. Identify Strategies (bullet list, minimum three). Include diagnostics, lifestyle/behavioral, medical, and community/resource approaches, along with a brief rationale for their fit within the context.
  3. Propose Solutions/Hypotheses (one or more). Explain how each addresses the problem and comment on ethical/cultural/logical considerations.
  4. Evaluate Potential Solutions (paragraph). Compare pros/cons, feasibility, risks, and likely impacts; reference relevant physiology concepts.
  5. Implement Solution (Plan) (step‑by‑step). Timeline, responsible parties, resources needed, and contingency notes.
  6. Evaluate Outcomes (Projection). Define three specific measurable indicators of success, when you’ll measure them, and how you’d revise the plan if indicators aren’t met.
  7. Post a 150–200-word Canvas discussion post summary that highlights your leading solution and invites two peer replies.
    1. Deliverable format: Single document (.docx or .pdf) 500–800 words for the main report + a separate 150–200 word discussion summary.
    2. Submit to Canvas assignment and post the discussion summary to the assignment discussion thread.

Self‑Check Checklist Before You Submit

  • Define the Problem: Did I include symptoms, relevant lab/data, and contextual details?
  • Identify Strategies: Did I list at least three approaches and explain why each fits the case?
  • Propose Solutions: Is my leading solution tailored to this person/community and respectful of cultural/ethical limits?
  • Evaluate Solutions: Did I compare alternatives with pros, cons, and feasibility?
  • Implement Plan: Are steps clear, sequenced, and realistically resourced?
  • Evaluate Outcomes: Did I list specific measures, when to check them, and how I’d change course?

Academic Integrity

  • Your report will be double-spaced and in 12 pt font, which follows the most recent version of the APA style guide.Links to an external site.
  • All sources that you used in your case study will be listed on a references cited page at the end of your written report and in your discussion response.
  • No AI is allowed for this assignment, except that the use of the Grammarly® App is permitted on this assignment.
    • If you use Grammarly or another grammar-checking AI program, you are required to cite your use of this tool on the "References Cited Download References Cited" page.To cite the use of Grammarly in APA style format, you can include it in your "References Cited" section as follows:**Reference List Entry:**Grammarly, Inc.
