Lab Animal Kingdom

Purpose

• To become familiar with the characteristics of the animal kingdom’s phyla
• This lab supports the Module Outcomes
  • MO3.1 Describe the characteristics associated with all animals (CO1)
  • MO3.2 Recognize the organizational features of animals with regards to body plan (CO1)
  • MO3.3 Recognize adaptations associated with the nine major phyla in the animal kingdom (CO1)
  • MO3.4 Use an organism’s characteristics to classify it into one of the nine major phyla of the animal kingdom (CO1)

Skills

• Research topics in your textbook or online
• Apply the information learned

Knowledge

• List characteristics for the phyla
• Recognize representative members of each phylum
• Use characteristics to assign an unknown to the correct phylum
• Name the taxonomic classification for each member

Task

• Study the PowerPoint and posted lecture videos for Chapter 21 Animals. An internet search is not required to complete these activities.
• Using your resources, answer the questions below.
• There are six activities, and they should be completed in order and the information builds upon previous activities.
• Identify the unknowns based on their description and presence or absence of characteristics
• Upload the completed lab as a Word document to the Assignment Dropbox titled Lab Animals by 11:59pm of the due date.
• This lab counts as 100 points in the Lab Activities category.
