Overview
Library Assignment: Exploring a General Biology Topic Through Research
Objective:
This Library Assignment is designed to strengthen your research skills, critical thinking, and understanding of key topics in General Biology. Each student will be assigned a specific topic from the course (please review your topic in the chart below) and will be required to analyze a peer-reviewed scientific article related to that topic. The goal is to help you engage with current scientific research, enhance your ability to evaluate scholarly sources, and apply course concepts in a real-world context.
Assignment Details:
Topic Assignment:
Each student will be assigned a unique topic from our General Biology curriculum (e.g., cell structure, DNA replication, enzyme function, photosynthesis, etc.). Your topic will align with key concepts already covered in class to reinforce your understanding through current scientific research. The article must be peer-reviewed, published within the last 5 years, and from a credible academic journal.
Task:
Your mission is to conduct a thorough analysis of the research article chosen for the assigned topic, covering the following key aspects. Your analysis should be presented in a well-organized document with the following structure:
Title Page: The topic assigned and title of the research article chosen, your name, university name, course, Instructure name, and date.
Introduction: Introduce the assigned topic and explain its biological significance.
Summary: Provide a concise summary of the article, highlighting key findings, methodology, and relevance to the field.
Analysis: Critically evaluate the article by discussing strengths, limitations, experimental design, and the broader implications of the research.
Connection to Course Material: Relate the research to what we’ve learned in class. Explain how the study reinforces, expands upon, or challenges the material we've discussed.
Personal Reflection: Share your personal thoughts on the importance of this topic and the research findings. Reflect on what you learned and how it influences your view of biology.
Reference: Properly cite sources APA at the end of the paper as a reference.
Submission:
Please adhere to the following formatting guidelines when submitting your assignment:
4.1 Document Format:
Your assignment should be typed in a legible font (e.g., Times New Roman, Arial) with 12-point font size.
Maintain 1-inch margins on all sides.
Double-space the entire document.
Reference/Citation Style APA 7th Edition
4.2 Title Page:
Topic Assigned and Title of the Research Article chosen (e.g., Cell Division - Mechanisms Regulating Mitotic Progression..)
Your Full Name
Name of University (Florida National University)
Course (BSC-1010: General Biology)
Instructure name
Submission Date
4.3 Structure of the Assignment:
Your analysis should be organized into the following sections:
Introduction:
Begin by introducing your assigned topic from the General Biology course (e.g., cell division, enzyme function, etc.). Explain its significance in the biological sciences and briefly outline the objective of your analysis—what you aim to explore or evaluate through the selected research article.
Summary:
Provide a clear and concise summary of the peer-reviewed research article related to your assigned topic. Focus on the study’s purpose, key findings, research methods, and the significance of the results. This section should help the reader understand the scope and relevance of the research.
Analysis:
Critically evaluate the content of the research article. Discuss the experimental design, methodology, results, and any strengths or weaknesses observed in the study. Assess the reliability of the data and consider the broader biological implications of the findings.
