The information below describes what is expected with both your post and reply. It is important to read this information before you complete the assignment.
Purpose
The purpose of the discussion post is to provide an opportunity for you to research scientific topics, learn to communicate complex topics to others, and connect what you are learning in class to events in real life.
We are studying body temperature regulation and how various organisms modulate it. In this post, you will use an article of your choice relating to the topic and share a brief summary of it with your classmates. This time you get to pick what to report on!
This topic supports the Module Outcomes: MO5.5 Describe homeostasis with regards to organs involved in maintenance of temperature and body fluids(CO6)
Skills
- Search the library databases for a topic
- Compose summary statements regarding the article you read and in replying to your classmate's topics
- Paraphrase information: Your post should be in your own words as you must paraphrase information from website gained during the research component of the activity.
Knowledge
- Learning about your chosen topic
- Expanding your knowledge by reading and posting to your classmate's topics
Task
Post
We are studying body temperature regulation and how various organisms modulate it. In this discussion post, you will briefly explain topics related to your selected article.
- Your topic: choose a topic that relates to thermoregulation and how changes in the environmental temperatures influence animals. Examples of topics are listed below; however, you may research and identify your own topic.
- The impact of climate change on where an animal can live.
- Explain how migration patterns have changed due to climate changes
- Explanation of impacts on animals, such as coral reefs, of changing environmental temperature change
- How animal body temperature has changed over time (set temperature for humans has dropped).
- How are animals becoming better adapted to environmental temperature changes (are their body shapes changing?)
- What you should not report on:
- Do not provide information about the basic differences between ectoderm and endoderms- no credit will be provided.
- Do not explain homeostasis or basic details of thermoregulation- no credit will be provided.
- What you should report:
- Ultimately, you will do a 3-2-1 analysis but a few items must be included.
- Reference for your article with enough information that others can find it- no credit if not provided.
- Identify if the animal is an ectotherm or endotherm.
- Relate the information to the animal being an ectotherm or an endotherm. For example, if the animal is an ectotherm, explain how its changing migration pattern is possible. Or if the animal is an endotherm, explain why increasing its core body temperature may affect metabolism.
- Good resources to search would be the New York Times or other reputable news sources, NPR, education sites, or government agency sites. You must include the reference information in your post in order to receive full credit so make sure to note it.
- After reading and studying your article, post in the Discussion area. You will do this by using the "Start a New Thread" button.
- 3-2-1 Analysis: Your post should be three paragraphs in length with each paragraph addressing one of the three prompts listed below.
- Paragraph one: you must include the cited reference with your post to be eligible for full credit for this paragraph. You should identify three things you learned from your article as it relates to our topic of homeostasis and thermoregulation and why it is of value to you.
- Paragraph two: You should identify two things that surprised you and explain why.
- Paragraph three: You should identify one question you still have about your topic and article.
- Your post should be formatted as follows:
- I learned that......and it is of value to me because.....
- I learned that......and it is of value to me because.....
- I learned that......and it is of value to me because.....
- I was surprised that....because...
- I was surprised that...because...
- One question I have is....
Reply
- Read your classmate's post and reply.
- Use the "Reply to Thread" button when you have chosen the discussion post you wish to comment on.
- In your response to a classmate's post, you should directly address the information in their post and provide positive feedback about their post. See Criteria below.
Criteria for Success
You will report to the class in your discussion post about your article related to homeostasis and thermoregulation. The discussion post is worth 20 points and is part of your Discussion grade in the course. The response to the prompts and fulfilling the expected writing requirements for the prompts is 15 points, while your response to a classmate's post and meeting expected writing requirements is worth 5 points.
Important Note: You are expected to paraphrase information you gathered during the research component of this activity and submit the work in your own words. If it is determined that information in the post was submitted by copy and paste from resources or the product of someone other than yourself, then paperwork related to academic dishonesty will be submitted to the Vice President of Academic Affairs and a grade of zero (0) for the assignment or F for the course will be given.
- In your post, you should address three items, each item should be covered in a separate paragraph and each paragraph should have at a minimum three sentences. Expectation: three paragraphs, each with a minimum of three sentences.
- Three prompts (5 points each prompt)
- 3-2-1 Analysis: Your post should be three paragraphs in length with each paragraph addressing one of the three prompts listed below.
- Paragraph one: you must include the cited reference with your post to be eligible for full credit for this paragraph. You should identify three things you learned from your article related to our topics of homeostasis and thermoregulation and why it is of value to you.
- Paragraph two: You should identify two things that surprised you and explain why.
- Paragraph three: You should identify one question you still have about the article topics
- Your post should be formatted as follows:

- 3-2-1 Analysis: Your post should be three paragraphs in length with each paragraph addressing one of the three prompts listed below.
- Three prompts (5 points each prompt)
- In your response to a classmate's post, you should directly address the information in their post and provide positive feedback about their post. Your response should be a minimum of two complete sentences based on expectations listed below.
- Response requirements (5 points)
- In at least two sentences you should provide positive feedback about their post. Examples of how this can be accomplished: This can be in the form of expressing your interest in the article topics, connecting it to the article you researched, and/or connecting the article to any previous knowledge you had about it. You may also ask them a question about the information in their article or post.
- Credit for the response will not be given for simply stating "This is an interesting article", "I agree", "Nice post", "No, I don' t agree" or similar statements.
