Overview
discussion 1: Futuring Analysis
Once an innovative idea has been thought of, it is important - especially in the life sciences where change happens quickly - to be able to assess the future success of the idea. What are the chances of it succeeding? Who would be the consumers be? Is there really a market for it? What has past experience shown? Is there a need?
These, and many more, are questions to ponder after coming up with a new technique, project, service, or product in the life sciences. That is where futuring comes in to play.
Initial response due by Saturday, 11:59 PM, EST:
For the initial response for this discussion, please do the following:
- Read the presentation on Futuring Analysis in the life sciences - Futuring in the Life Sciences PowerPoint
- Choose one of the Futuring techniques.
- Explain the basis of the futuring technique (you may need to refer to other sources).
- Explain in detail the benefit of applying this futuring technique to innovations in the life sciences.
- You must use and cite at least two references to support your response.
- The initial response must be written in your own words and contain at least 100 words.
- Please be mindful of grammatical error
Discussion 2: As you have learned from the Week 4 learning resources (UMGC, n.d.), deviant behaviors are violations of social norms, and what is "deviant" is defined variously across time and place. Our resources for this week offer a variety of sociological theories for why deviance occurs in society. Your main post for this discussion should have two parts:
Part 1. Identify something that people do that would be considered a violation of social norms. Briefly discuss this action. Who regards this action as deviant and why?
Part 2. Explain why this type of deviance occurs and/or how society responds to this form of deviance, according to one of the theories in the chapter. As part of your explanation, make sure to also briefly explain the theory.
References and Citations
Here is the reference you should cite in your main post:
University of Maryland Global Campus. (n.d.). Week 4. Socialization, Social groups, and deviance. Document posted in UMGC SOCY 100 online classroom, archived at https://learn.umgc.edu.
Make sure to include the complete reference information at the end of your post. If you refer to any additional sources, please be sure to include them in your reference list as well.
When referring to the different topics of the material in the learning resources within your posts, use the following citation format: (UMGC, n.d., name of topic).
For example: (UMGC, n.d., Socialization) or (UMGC, n.d., Deviance and Social Control).
If you use any additional sources in your posts, be sure to cite them in the post and include the full reference information at the end of the post. To learn more about how to cite in APA style, visit the UMGC Library at APA 7th Edition Citation Examples: General Rules.
Provide your initial post by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday. Your initial post should be at least 200 words in length, excluding the discussion prompt and the references. Please use in-text APA citations within your post as well as full APA references at the end of your post.
ASSIGNMENT 1:
Assignment 1 – Groups, Leadership, and the Workplace, due the end of week 4. Assignment should be a minimum of 500 words, not including the reference list. Worth 12% of final grade.
This assignment assumes that you have read and studied the Learning Resource materials for weeks 3 and 4. Please structure your assignment as an essay, not as a list. Be sure that your assignment has an introduction and a conclusion. Your assignment should be structured as follows:
Part 1: Introduction
In a single paragraph, provide the reader with the key points you will be addressing in this assignment.
Part 2 (200-300 words): Primary Group and Secondary Group
In this part of the assignment, you will analyze two groups of which you are member. For the first group, choose a primary (expressive) group. The second group should be a formal organization, such as a workplace or UMGC, or it could be a different secondary (instrumental) group.
For each type of group, using sociological definitions, explain the following:
- Why the group would be considered a primary group or a secondary group
- Your status in the group
- The roles associated with your status
- What type of leader(s) lead(s) the group (instrumental, democratic, expressive, laisse-faire, or authoritarian) and what that type of leadership entails (in other words, what does the leader do that reflects of their type of leadership)?
Part 3 (200-300 words): Ideal Employment
Imagine your ideal (paid or unpaid) employment and answer each of the following questions: MY IDEAL EMPLOYMENT WOULD BE A PHYSICIAN AT A PEDIATRIC CENTER
- What would be your ideal status and role in the workplace (be specific)? Define status and role as part of your answer.
- What kind of organization would you like to work for (utilitarian, normative, or something else) and why?
- What type of leadership style would you most prefer for your boss to have and/or for you to have (instrumental, democratic, expressive, laisse-faire, or authoritarian), and why?
- As you think of your future career goals, whom do you regard as your reference group, and why?
Part 4: Conclusion/Reflection: In a final thorough paragraph, explain what you learned from this assignment. Did it change your view about your future career plans? Be sure to identify at least one new thing that you learned over the course of writing this assignment.
Part 5: Reference List: Your Reference List should include all the resources that you have cited in your Assignment. At the very least, it should include the reference information for the Week 3 and 4 Learning Resources.
This assignment will use Turnitin to assess academic integrity. Please see your syllabus for more information on how Turnitin will be used in this class.
