NOTE:

Week 1 Summary Research Topic & Justification

For this project, I've selected the topic of research namely, "The Impact of Social Media Usage on Academic Motivation and Well-Being Among University Students." This topic was chosen since nowadays social media became a permanent part of student's life in university, and students often uses platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, telegram etc for communication, sharing information, entertainment and academic work. While social media offers opportunities for peer support and access to educational resources, there have been rising concerns about the potentially negative influence that social media can have on students' academic engagement, focus and mental health.

It is important to have an understanding of this balance because university life comes with significant academic demands, increasing independence, as well as new social pressures. Social media may improve learning by learning to collaborate and through access to knowledge, yet excessive or passive use may help to contribute to procrastination, lowered motivation, anxiety and lowered well-being in general. Existing research has yielded mixed findings, and a more focused research agenda that tests the effects of particular patterns of social media behaviour-including frequency of use, purpose, and emotional reliance, etc.-is still needed, in order to test its effects on students' academic and psychological outcomes. This study therefore seeks to help contribute towards a better understanding of these dynamics so that educators, counsellors and institutions can formulate the necessary informed strategies to drive positive digital habit formation for health and productivity among university students.
