Assignment - Module 1: Assignment -- Ethics in Business
Completion Instructions:
Read: Taylor, A. 2017. We Shouldn’t Always Need a “Business Case” to Do the Right Thing. Harvard Business Review [HBSP Coursepack]
Answer the following questions:
- Ethics vs. Profitability: Alison Taylor argues that businesses should not always require a financial justification to act ethically. Do you agree with her position? Why or why not? Support your argument with real-world examples of companies that have either prioritized ethics over profits or justified ethical decisions with a business case.
- The Role of Ethical Culture in Business: Taylor suggests that ethical behavior should be ingrained in corporate culture rather than treated as a strategic decision. In your view, is it realistic for businesses to prioritize ethics independently of financial considerations? Discuss the challenges and benefits of embedding ethics as a core value in an organization.
- The Practicality of Ethics Without a Business Case: Critics might argue that without a strong business case, ethical initiatives may struggle to gain long-term corporate support. Do you think ethics and business success must always align, or is there room for ethical decision-making that does not contribute to financial gain? Provide examples to support your stance.
