Overview
discussion 1
In two well-developed paragraphs, using your own words, define what research means. In your definition, explain what makes something “research” (for example: asking questions, gathering information, analyzing evidence, and reaching a conclusion). Be sure to include what you think research is not (for example: guessing, repeating a rumor, or relying on one opinion without evidence).
In your second paragraph, explain how research shows up in your life on a daily basis. Think about the choices you make and where you get your information (social media, news, school, family/friends, reviews, websites, etc.). Provide at least two real-life examples of times you used research, whether you realized it or not (examples could include: choosing a product, comparing prices, checking health information, deciding where to eat, picking a major/career path, or verifying whether something online is true). Then answer: Why is research important to you personally? How does it help you make better decisions, avoid misinformation, or reach your goals?
discussion 2
In a well-developed response, explain the difference between an independent variable and a dependent variable using your own words. In your explanation, describe how the two variables work together in research and why it is important for researchers to understand the difference between them. Be sure to answer:
- Which variable is being changed or tested?
- Which variable is being measured as the result?
- How can you tell the difference between them when reading a study or research question?
Next, provide three examples of independent variables and three examples of dependent variables. For each example, explain why it is considered independent or dependent. Your examples must include a short explanation that clearly shows the relationship between the two variables (cause and effect). In other words, don’t just list the variable, explain what would happen in a real research scenario.
To help guide your thinking, include at least one full example research statement using this format:
- “If ______ changes (independent variable), then ______ will change (dependent variable).”
