Discussion Topic - Case Study: Analyzing Disruptive and Reverse Innovation Using Lean Startup Principles
Companies frequently disrupt or ingeniously adapt to stand out in the dynamic business world. Often, methodologies like the one Eric Ries proposes in "The Lean Startup" underpin these success stories. This online discussion assignment asks participants to explore such tales of innovation.
Assignment:
For this discussion, select a company that epitomizes disruptive or reverse innovation, delving into how "The Lean Startup" principles may have played a role in its journey. Was there an MVP that evolved into a game-changer? Did the company face pivotal moments of decision-making? And has the company ever reimagined a product for a different market, embodying reverse innovation? How do these elements influence the company's innovative prowess?
Initial Response:
- Select a company that epitomizes disruptive or reverse innovation for your initial discussion response. This could be an organization you have chosen for prior assignments, one you've worked for, or one you admire from afar.
- Instructions. Please include the following in your initial post:
- Company Selection: Choose a company that exemplifies disruptive and/or reverse innovation. Introduce the company, highlighting its key products/services and market relevance.
- Lean Startup Application: Examine if and how the company has utilized principles from "The Lean Startup" in its innovation trajectory. Investigate the company’s MVPs: Were specific products/services that commenced as MVPs and later emerged as significant innovations?
- Navigating Change: Analyze a pivotal moment in the company's history where it chose to 'pivot' or 'persevere.' Discuss the ramifications of this decision on its innovation pathway.
- Global Innovations: If pertinent, explore the company’s endeavors in reverse innovation. Were there instances where they innovated for less affluent markets, which later got adopted in wealthier markets? Contextualize this innovation journey using the Build-Measure-Learn framework.
- Concluding Thoughts: Summarize your main points and pose a thought-provoking question to your peers about the topic for further discussion.
- Remember, this discussion seeks to unravel the intricate dance between disruptive and reverse innovation through the lens of 'The Lean Startup' principles. Your insights should be rooted in your observations and meticulous analysis of your selected company.
Response to Others
- Read at least two posts by your classmates. Respond with thoughtful questions or comments that invite further discussion. For instance, you might:
- Acknowledging the main points or arguments your peer presented in their initial response.
- Provide additional insights, experiences, or examples to extend the discussion or offer a new angle on the topic.
- Provide additional resources or strategies that might enhance the implementation process discussed by your peer.
You will actively participate in discussions for full credit by responding to the discussion question and replying to other students' responses. The initial response should be a substantive post (~400+ words) demonstrating your achievement of the discussion question requirements/intent.
In addition, you are expected to respond to the posts of at least TWO of your fellow learners' discussion posts demonstrating that you have read other students' initial posts by drafting and posting a "peer review" for at least TWO others' article summaries. A Peer Review is an evaluation of creative work by individuals from the same field (in this case, the same class) with the intent of maintaining or enhancing the content of the work. These responses to other learners should be substantive posts that contribute to the conversation by asking questions, respectfully debating positions, and presenting supporting information relevant to the topic. Also, respond to any follow-up questions the instructor directs to you in the discussion area.
Remember to locate, use, cite, and list references to validate statements of fact or corroborate personal opinions/points of view.
