Discussion Topic

Follow

Scripture Reading

James 1:19-20; Ephesians 4:29

Required Reading

  • Northouse | Chapter 8: Transformational Leadership (Pages 179–214)
  • Irving and Strauss | Chapter 7: Communicating with Clarity (Pages 141–162)

Learning Objectives Achieved: 2 and 5

James 1:19–20 calls leaders to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. Ephesians 4:29 reminds leaders that their words should build others up rather than tear them down. Irving and Strauss emphasize that leadership communication must be clear and flow in both directions, while Northouse shows that transformational leadership depends on influence, trust, and follower development.

Using at least one properly cited reference from the textbook, explain why communication is essential for effective leadership and follower trust. For personal application, reflect on a leadership situation in which communication broke down.

  • Did the leader fail to listen well, speak clearly, or respond in a way that built others up?
  • What did that communication failure reveal about the leader?

Describe one specific action you will take to communicate with greater clarity, restraint, and encouragement in your own leadership.

Scripture Reading

James 1:19-20; Ephesians 4:29

Required Reading

  • Northouse | Chapter 8: Transformational Leadership (Pages 179–214)
  • Irving and Strauss | Chapter 7: Communicating with Clarity (Pages 141–162)

Learning Objectives Achieved: 2 and 5

Transformational leadership is not about control. It is about developing people and helping them achieve more than expected. This requires clear communication, strong relationships, and intentional leadership. Using at least one properly cited reference from the textbook, explain how transformational leadership moves people beyond expectations.

You are leading a team that is underperforming, not because of ability, but because they lack clarity, motivation, and direction. Describe two leadership actions you could take to address this. Then explain which action would be most effective and why, using the readings and the assigned Scriptures.

Explain how your leadership would develop people, not just improve performance.
