SCI-260 6-1 DISCUSSION: How Researchers Communicate Information

Overview

Science communication shapes how people understand and act on information. Researchers share their findings through journals, conferences, podcasts, YouTube channels, and TikTok. STEM professionals like Neil deGrasse Tyson, Mark Rober, Destin Sandlin, Simone Giertz, Marques Brownlee, and Derek Muller reach millions of people by making complex topics accessible and relatable. In the past, classic science communicators, like Carl Sagan and Jane Goodall, also made science meaningful to broad audiences through television series, public lectures, and radio programs.

In this discussion, you’ll examine how scientific information reaches diverse audiences, what makes it credible, and why accessible science matters for civic decision making and scientific literacy.

Remember to remain thoughtful and respectful toward your peers and instructor in your initial and response discussion posts.

Create one initial post and respond to at least two of your classmates.

For your initial post, address the following:

For this discussion, you will find a specific example of a STEM professional or science communicator who has successfully shared a STEM-related issue with the public. This person can be a contemporary communicator addressing an issue now or a historical figure whose work continues to shape how people understand science.

Once you have found an example, share a link or reference and the STEM-related issue discussed. Then address the following:

  1. How does the communicator make a complex STEM-related issue understandable and engaging for a diverse, non-expert audience?
    • How does the communicator capture the audience’s attention and make the topic relevant for everyone?
    • What communication strategies do the communicator use to help make the science accessible? For example, are storytelling, analogies, visuals, and so forth used?
  1. What makes the communicator and the message trustworthy?
    • What evidence, credentials, or transparency are shared?
  1. Why does the example show that accessible science communication matters to everyone?
    • How might it help people make informed choices or understand the broader social relevance of the STEM-related issue?
    • What does it show about the role of science communication in encouraging scientific literacy and civic decision making?
