Evaluating Arguments and Overcoming Cognitive Obstacles
Critical thinking is a fundamental skill that allows individuals to analyze arguments, assess reasoning, and make informed decisions. In this assignment, you will critically analyze a written argument, identify its components, and evaluate its strengths and weaknesses. The goal is to apply the principles of critical thinking to identify assumptions, analyze reasoning, and determine the validity of conclusions.
Write a critical analysis essay in which you evaluate an argument of your choice. You may select an argument from an academic article, opinion editorial, or another reputable source. If you are having difficulty finding an argument, you may use this article: Militarization of AI Has Severe Implications for Global Security and WarfareLinks to an external site..
Your analysis should systematically address the following aspects of critical thinking:
Identifying the Argument’s Structure
Clearly state the conclusion of the argument.
Identify the reasons provided in support of the conclusion.
Determine any unstated assumptions that the argument relies upon.
Evaluating the Truth and Validity of the Argument
Assess how well the reasons and assumptions support the conclusion.
Consider what additional evidence is needed to assess the truth of the assumptions.
Analyze whether the argument relies on evidence from questionable sources.
Strengthening or Weakening the Argument
Reflect on your own knowledge or experience: Does it strengthen or weaken the argument?
Identify any alternative conclusions that could be drawn but were not mentioned by the author.
Determine whether the argument contains explanations and assess their plausibility.
Assessing Analogies, Comparisons, and Principles
If the argument uses analogies or comparisons, evaluate whether the compared items are truly alike in relevant respects.
Identify any principles upon which the passage relies and assess their validity.
Identifying Flaws in Reasoning
If the conclusion is not well supported, explain how the reasoning from premises to conclusion is flawed.
Discuss any logical fallacies, biases, or cognitive errors that weaken the argument.
Suggest improvements or alternative reasoning that would make the argument stronger.
