Overview
Think about an individual you want to motivate, influence, or whose trust you would like to earn, and reflect on the following: What is your usual mode of communicating with them? Do you speak first? How does this impact the conversation? How might the See-Hear-Speak tool help the other person, you, or the relationship?
Looking at the Conversation Tips in the Perceptual Positions Process document in this week's resources, which ones might you try to experiment with? What indicators will you look for to know that each step of See-Hear-Speak has been achieved?
Pick someone you would like to ‘see’ better, preferably someone you find it hard to build a rapport with. Think about a time when the two of you had a conflict. Walk through the Perceptual Positions four-step process and reflect on the conversation. What insight does this give you to improve the relationship? Reflect on the relationship from the three different perspectives:
Step 1 - Your Shoes: What are my frustrations with the way we are working together or with the situation we are in? What (if I’m really honest) do I think and feel about the other person? How do I react towards them? What assumptions am I making?
Step 2 – Their Shoes: (really imagine as if you are in their shoes, looking back) What are their frustrations with the way we are working together or with the situation we are in? What (if I’m really honest) do I imagine they think and feel about working with me? What is their normal pattern of reacting towards me? What are the thoughts, assumptions, and beliefs they may be holding?
Step 3 – Observer: (looking objectively at both people in front of you in position 1 and 2) What is currently going on that prevents a good working relationship? How might this be resolved? Looking dispassionately at the relationship, what is the potential?
Step 4 – Your Shoes Again: What new insight or understanding do you have now that you didn’t have before? What will you now do?
