Formative Assessment: Your Research Topic and Title
It is time to consider your research topic. In this formative assessment, you will provide a self-analysis of your current thoughts of where your research is heading. Complete a table using the following questions as your guide. Use APA formatting for your table, as you will need this throughout your capstone process. You will use a narrative table format (see pages 223-224 in APA 7th ed for examples.) Suggested headings: Questions – My Reflections
Questions:
- What is a topic that is interesting to me?
- What is the scope of my topic – broad or narrow? How will I make it researchable and relevant?
- What are some current research ideas on my topic, including citations?
- Where can I search for potential data sets covering aspects of my topic?
- Why is this topic so important to me?
- What do I seek to add to the general knowledge base through my research?

- The recommended length for this formative is 1-2 pages.
- This may be submitted as a Word document.
Formative Assessment: Building Your Literature Matrix
We are going to begin our literature review process. In this formative assessment, you will provide an analysis and synthesis of one research article related to your research question. You will complete this using our Literature Review Matrix. You may replace the sample information (in blue) with your own (change font to black). You may choose to create your own matrix. If you do this, follow APA guidelines for a narrative table. [See pages 223-224 in the APA Publication Manual (7th edition) for samples.]
Steps for Completion of Assignment:
- Select journal article related to your research topic for your capstone.
- Complete the literature matrix for your journal article.
- Write a summary (1-2 paragraphs) of what you learned from the exercise and how you feel it will help you in your capstone research.

Summative Assessment: Literature Review Matrix (10 or More References)
Analyze and synthesize at least 10 scholarly sources as they relate to your current research topic for your capstone.
Specific Assignment Details:
- Include all needed elements of the scholarly texts so you and others can instantly search and find your sources.
- Provide key details from each article you feel are key to your capstone research.
- Include at least 10 sources for your literature review matrix.
