In order to earn full credit on this discussion assignment, each student must submit one post and two replies.
- Find an example/problem that illustrates one of the concepts presented in Sections 12.1-12.4 ( a. Sketch the graph of a curve given a set of parametric equations; b. Convert parametric equations to a rectangular equation and vice versa; c.Find the first derivative of a function defined parametrically; d.Find an equation of the tangent line at a given point on a curve defined parametrically; e. Calculate the arc length of a curve defined parametrically; f.Convert equations from rectangular to polar coordinates and vice versa; g. Graph polar equations; h.Find the slope of the tangent line at a given point on a polar curve; i.Find the area of a region bounded by polar graphs; j.Calculate the arc length of a curve in the polar coordinate system; k.Examine conic sections; l.Determine the standard equation of a parabola, ellipse, or hyperbola given geometric properties of the conic; m.Graph the conic given an equation; n.Examine the eccentricity of a parabola, ellipse, and hyperbola; o. Examine polar equations of a parabola, ellipse, and hyperbola). Type and submit (a) the problem/example you are going to demonstrate (what is given and what you need to find); (b) a detailed solution. Do not repeat examples/concepts of other students. Read WRITING MATHEMATICS WELL.docxActions and follow the described instructions. Note: you must use the equation editor to post the math symbols, points will be deducted for incorrect notation. This part of the assignment is 70 points.
- Respond to at least two classmates with substantive posts. Replies like "Excellent Job" or "Your explanation helped me to understand this better" do not qualify. Other students should learn something useful from your replies. If your reply is not substantive/informative, you will lose at least 10 points for the reply. If you submit a praising comment to an example with a conceptual or computational mistake, you will lose at least 10 points as it means you have not read the example carefully. A good discussion board reply would be:
- demonstrating a different way to solve the problem
- explaining how ideas used in the solution can be applied in real life situations (statements like "this is used in physics and engineering " do not qualify; you have to present real life example(s) and explain why the idea works for that particular problem).
- finding an incorrect notation or a mistake in the original solution or posts of other students and explaining why it is incorrect.
- showing how the offered method can be used for different type of problems
This part of the assignments is 30 points (15 points each reply).
Make it a simple and clear explanation for this discussion. You can use doc file with equation editor and send it to here once you done.
