Anglia Ruskin University Robotic Drug Discussion Response

Overview

Respond  to  Jazmin

One of the innovations that caught my attention was the robotic drug capsule to help deliver large protein drugs such as insulin to gut so they can be easily absolved in the digestive track. This was very interesting to me since I am a diabetic, I do not have to take insulin shots but it’s a big concern for me. I do not want to be pinching myself every day! Large protein drugs are difficult to take orally because they can't pass through the mucus barrier that lines the digestive tract, so they must be injected or administered in hospitals. This capsule has a robotic cap that spins and tunnels through the mucus barrier when it reaches the small intestine, allowing drugs carried by the capsule to pass into cells lining the intestine.
