Overview
Task 1:
Submit a photo or image of your polyatomic ions.
Find the polyatomic ions from course materials. These can be found in many places, such as the Worksheet #6 p. 4, or the textbook, or under Course Resources (scroll down and look for Polyatomic Ions). For exams and quizzes, you can refer to the ions listed on the periodic table.
Organize the Ions by charge, and write the formula (with charge) as well as the name of each.
- Write each ion of the same change in the same color
Task 2:
- Build your Table as directed below.
Submit a photo or image of your table of ionic compounds. Click on the "Select" menu to apply the "Ionic Compounds" label and categorize your post.
Build your table Select several cations and list them down the left side of your page.
Be sure to include transition metal ions and ammonium, as well as simple ions.
- Also be sure to include ions with different charges, such as Fe3+ and/or Ti4+.
- Complete your Table by writing a list of anions across the top of the page. Be sure to include Polyatomic Ions as well as differently-charged ions. Draw a grid of lines so that there is a box for each combination. In that box, you will write the formula of the compound that forms from those two ions.
Example: I completed two compounds; you do ~100!
OH-SO42-PO43-Na+
NaOH
- ......Cu2+.........NH4+......(NH4)3PO4
- Use ~10 anions and ~10 cations to form ~100 compounds. (5 points)
Write the names for those compounds. (5 points)
Using the Solubility Rules (can be found on the periodic table), indicate whether each compound is soluble in water by labeling it with the appropriate phase designation: solid (s) or aqueous (aq). (5 points)
Task 3:
Submit a photo or image of your completed Periodic Table.
- You can select a label. Please label it "Periodic table."
- The periodic table linked below has a set of tasks below the image of the periodic table. Complete these steps and post your beautiful periodic table work of art (or mess-- that's fine too!) to this forum or as a reply to this post.
Fill in symbols from Z=1 to 20
Say the names of elements 1 to 20.
Fill in modern group numbers above the "traditional" group numbers.
Place the zig-zag line that separates metals and non-metals.
Label: Alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, halogens, noble gases.
Place braces: { } around the groups collecting representative elements, transition elements, noble gases.
Name the two elements with properties most similar to Sulfur.
Going down the groups, do atoms get larger or smaller?
Going across the rows, do the atoms get larger or smaller?
Criteria for Success:
Task 4 :
Submit a photo or image of your combined table of molecular shapes. (You may also type in your table as a post if you choose.)
You can select a label. Please label it "Molecular Geometries"
Inside Worksheet #5 Molecules and Bonding, find Table I (page 13) and Table II (page 15).
Make your own version of these shapes, grouped by Steric Number (SN).
Feel free to be creative and use colors or drawings to sharpen your memory of these shapes.
