Chemistry Excel Sheet

Overview

1. Copy and paste your molecules heat capacity vs temperature data from NIST into a new excel file. Make sure to include the entire temperature range, even if the data is split up into multiple tables on NIST.

2. Graph your molecules heat capacity vs. T.

3. Find the best fit trendline for your molecule's data.

a. If your molecule's temperature dependent heat capacity seems to behave differently at high vs low T, split the full T range up into two temperature regions and independently fit each temperature region to its own trendline. This is best done in two separate graphs.

4. Copy and paste your molecule's coefficients for the polynomial fit into organized and labeled individual cells.

5. Create a calculated heat capacity column and call on the individual cells that you made in step 4 to calculate the heat capacity.

6. Create a difference column between the calculated data and the NIST data. Calculate the standard deviation of this column and label it clearly.

7. Plot your calculated data on top of the NIST data in such a way that you can see both sets of data overlapping.

Repeat these steps for each molecule in your equation. For each molecule, create a separate tab in your excel file.

Heat Capacity Data Analysis

Answer the following questions with respect to your completed excel data from this week. Answer to the best of your ability, sometimes you are being asked what you think. Cite any resources that you use.

Which molecules did you model this week and for each molecule, what was the temperature range of available heat capacity data?

What conversion factor can you use to switch between specific heat and heat capacity?

What is the temperature dependence of heat capacity for each of your molecules? Write your answers in terms of Cp(T) and T. If your molecule has a low and a high T dependence region, write them both and indicate high or low T.

Did the temperature dependence of the heat capacity for each molecule look the same (was the shape of the graph the same for each molecule)? Describe the dependence of each of your molecules.
